3 world record captured by Padma Bridge.

The last span of the 6.15 km long Padma Bridge was laid on Thursday, December 10, 2020. Through this the structure of the bridge was completed. The Padma Bridge has already made a few records.

Project sources say the world record number is three.

First Record:

The first is about the piling of the bridge. Steel piles have been placed at a maximum depth of 122 meters under the pillars of the Padma Bridge. These piles have a radius of three meters. No bridge in the world has yet required such deep piling and no thick piles have been laid, the engineers said.

This young man came to see the last moment of laying Spain on the Padma bridge in the morning. His name is Shoaib Ali Bokhari (32). Motor mechanic by profession. Lives in Badda, Dhaka. The village home is in Charnachipur village of Sadarpur upazila of Faridpur. His family took refuge in Dhaka in 2006 when his house was destroyed by the floods. He is the driver of Uber.

Second Record:

The second record is the bearing of an earthquake. The capacity of ‘Fractional Pendulum Bearings’ on this bridge is 10,000 tons. So far no bridge has been fitted with bearings of such capacity. The Padma Bridge is being built to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake.

Third Record:

The third record is related to river governance. 1.10 billion contract has been signed with Chinese contractor Sinohydro Corporation for river management. Never before has there been such a big tender in river governance alone.

The dream comes true, the two side of the Padma are connected.

Usually the bridges are made of steel or concrete. But the Padma Bridge is a mixture of steel and concrete. The main structure of the bridge is made of steel, known as span. Poles and pavements are made of concrete. The length of each span is 150 meters. The whole bridge is visible by connecting the spans with 42 poles. The length of the main bridge of Padma, i.e. the part of the river is 6.15 km. However, about four kilometers more bridges have already been built. This is called viaduct. There is no steel span in it.

The Padma Bridge has two floors.

Vehicles will run on steel spans. Work is underway to install concrete slabs to make this path. When done, the backing will be done. When the work is completed, the traffic route will be 22 meters wide, four lanes. There will be a divider in the middle. The train will run through the span. There will be a railway line on the bridge. However, meter gauge and broad gauge trains will run on it.

When they came to the viaduct, the path of vehicles and trains became separate and merged with the ground.

The wait for the Padma Bridge is almost two decades old. The wait began in 1997 with a pre-feasibility study. In the midst of this, the future of the dream bridge is in jeopardy with the donors, including the World Bank. In the meantime, the government decided to implement a big project like the Padma Bridge with its own funds without taking a loan from the World Bank.

Then in 2014 the work of the main bridge started. However, land acquisition, construction of connecting roads, rehabilitation of affected people and construction of infrastructure had already started. However, after the start of the work of the main bridge and river management, many challenges have come. Sometimes the Padma is broken, sometimes the work is stuck due to technical complications. The design had to be changed. But the work did not stop.

The way of work progressed.

Work on the main bridge began in November 2014. The job is awarded to China Major Bridge Engineering Company, a Chinese contractor. An agreement worth Tk 12,133 crore was signed with them. The work was to be completed within four years.

In the year following the commencement of the work, part of the construction site at Mawa, including the batching plant, was washed away by the river.

In 2016, soft soil was found under 22 poles in the soil test under each pole. Then the design needs to be modified. The transfer of the ferry is also delayed.

Initially, there were plans to place six piles under each pole. The UK consultancy decided to revise the design and extend the piles one by one. For this, the construction of the poles took until the completion of March this year.

All in all, this work takes about an extra year. For this, sometimes the work loses some momentum. The contractor was given extra time of 2 years and 6 months. By November, 91 percent of the work on the main bridge had been completed.

River governance work also started in December 2014. The contractor is Sinohydro Corporation of China. The contract with them is 6 thousand 706 crore rupees. The work was to be completed in four years. Due to the current in 2016, a deep canyon was formed at the bottom of Mawa river. From this part, erosion also occurred at different times at the ends of Mawa and Jajira. As a result, the work of river management was somewhat disrupted. Now the time has been extended to two and a half years. By November, 6 percent of the river management work has been completed. Construction of two-lane connecting road, toll plaza and infrastructure has already been completed. Besides, rehabilitation of the victims has also been completed. In all, the work on the Padma Bridge project has progressed by 82.50 percent till November.

Expenditure on construction of Padma bridge:

On July 4, 2001, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Padma Bridge. After a detailed study, in 2004 the Japanese donor agency JICA recommended the construction of the Padma Bridge at the Mawa-Jazira end. The cost of the Padma Bridge project passed by ECNEC in 2008 was Tk 10,162 crore. Expenditure was increased to Tk 20,508 crore in 2011. After the second phase amendment in 2016, the expenditure stood at Tk 28,793 crore. After that, without amending the project proposal, in June 2016, the expenditure increased again to Tk 30,193 crore.

It has been mentioned that if the Padma Bridge project is implemented, the GDP will increase at the rate of 1.23 percent.
